You’ve finally finished your degree, and it’s time to get your career on track! Your first role in the workforce as a recent graduate will be one of the most critical influences on the future progression of your career and ultimate job satisfaction.

I remember very well how this time in your life can be so exciting but also sometimes overwhelming.

It can be incredibly challenging to identify what matters the most to you and what to look for in a potential employer – especially when you haven’t worked in that many environments before. Based on my own experience and what I’ve learned throughout my career, I believe there are a few key things to consider when deciding what kind of business you want to start your career in.

Of course, money matters and it can be tempting to simply go with the company that pays the most. However, just because the starting salary is good, it doesn’t mean that it will set you up for a successful career, for opportunities to learn and progress and to earn more money over time.

Here are some things you should look for beyond the salary that’s on offer that can have a significant impact on how well your career will progress in the long run:

Is the organisation ready to take on a graduate? Do they have the mentoring facilities to teach and coach you to be the best you can be?

Do they have business and professional values that align with your personal values?

Are they investing in your ongoing training and upskilling?

Do they have a documented training plan for their graduates, or are you just going to be left to sink or swim?

As you develop your skills, is there enough scope for you to grow within the business? Is there an opportunity to work in other offices in Australia, or within a global network?

In addition to these questions, you should also consider whether they will be able to give you exposure across various industries and verticals. If you don’t want to get pigeon-holed into one specific sector, you will require a rotation programme where you receive exposure across multiple departments and can learn about different areas of the industry to identify and develop your own interests.

Also, ask yourself if they are growing fast enough to keep you challenged and with the ability to move into new roles in the years ahead. But also consider if they are personal enough to ensure you will not just become a number that can get lost in a big machine.

Most importantly, consider their company culture. Are the other graduates learning, progressing and achieving their goals? Are the managers serious about the development of their people, and if so, how do they demonstrate this? Are the other employees having fun and do they seem genuinely passionate about their teams and the work they are doing?

Considering all of these questions carefully, instead of simply accepting the first offer you receive or the position with the highest salary, will ensure you kick start your career with a company that is invested in you and in developing your skills. This will have a massive impact on your career progression, job satisfaction and income potential in the long-term.

At Syndeticom, our graduate programme is designed to give you the best career start possible. The programme encompasses relevant industry exposure, putting theory and academic knowledge into practice, and is focused on professional mentoring and technical and professional training. It’s also designed for you to have fun along the way.

Through our graduate programme, we offer you the opportunity to perform multiple roles within our different projects and departments, including:

Client Services

ICT

Fitout and Construction

Audio Visual

Data Centre

Sales & Estimating

Finance

During the 24 month programme, you will have the opportunity to spend time with some of those teams, allowing you to develop a solid base knowledge, professional skills and networks.

In other words, our graduate programme is an excellent way to launch yourself and to make sure you receive the support, training and exposure that will form the foundation of a long, successful career.

Being part of our graduate programme is a unique and exciting opportunity! It’s your chance to obtain greater exposure and experience and to put your knowledge into practice. We offer the opportunity to perform multiple roles within our different business units on a rotating basis. This gives you more exposure to a range of departments including sales, client services, technical services, fitout and construction, audio visual, data centre, estimating and finance.

During the 24 month programme, you will have the opportunity to spend time with each team, allowing you to develop a sound base knowledge, professional skills and networks. It truly is a great way to kick start your career.

To help you learn more about our graduate programme, we’ve compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions. If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please do not hesitate to contact us and ask directly.

What makes Syndeticom’s graduate programme unique?

Our graduate programme is an excellent way to kick-start a successful career. Like most graduate programmes, it includes rotations across each part of the business to help find your areas of interest. In addition, the programme offers personal one-on-one mentoring with a member from the executive team to develop your career and, of course, the opportunity to work with an awesome team.

The one thing that makes our graduate programme stand out is the mentoring and training our graduates receive. Each of our graduates is teamed with a mentor from our executive team to support them throughout the programme. You will find that this mentor is exceptionally approachable and accessible, and they will sincerely value your input. Your mentor will not only assist you with your every-day tasks but will also discuss your career development plan and what steps you need to take to achieve your career goals.

In addition, you will receive training in a wide variety of areas within our business, allowing you to learn everything you need for a successful career. If you want to learn something we don’t yet offer training in, you’re encouraged to ask for it. We will do our very best to make this training possible.

Finally, our family culture provides a great advantage for our graduates. We have a flat team structure, which means that things move faster than they do in large enterprises and grads have relaxed and easy access to people with a wide range of experience and expertise throughout the business.

Is there a fixed start date for the graduate programme?

No, there is no fixed start date. Although many graduate programmes have a fixed application date and a fixed starting date, our graduate programme offers the flexibility to apply at any time and to start the programme immediately, at any time of the year.

How do I apply for the graduate programme?

You can submit your application by sending your resume and cover letter through the form found on our graduate program page.

What will I be doing on each rotation?

Each rotation will be different. You will learn specific processes in each of the different departments, as well as speaking with clients and interacting with internal and external stakeholders that are relevant to that particular department.

Even though day-to-day tasks change all the time, here are some tasks that our graduates work on regularly:

Assisting with documentation and tracking of projects

Managing workload

Interacting and collaborating with technicians, supervisors, apprentices and other team members

Communicating and interacting with our clients

Helping to create solutions that automate tasks and increase efficiencies

Estimating, including reviewing tenders and meeting with vendors

Assisting project managers

In addition to supporting other team members, our graduates are given the autonomy to work on different projects independently.

“Throughout the last 16 months, I’ve had the chance to be part of multiple areas in Syndeticom. I have been given ownership of creating and maintaining several tools to assist the business both as a whole and the individual teams. Throughout this, I have been given the autonomy to make choices and push the tasks in what I believe to be the best direction. Most of my other tasks have involved assisting the operations team in estimating, logistics and planning various installation works across Data Centre, Major Projects and Client Services.”

Andrew Craig

Is there a permanent opportunity after the programme?

Yes, there often is. Graduates are generally recruited and trained with the expectation that they will remain with us upon completion of the programme. We invest in our graduates as we believe they might be our leaders of tomorrow. Given how much we invest in our graduates, we typically want to retain them in the business once they finish the programme.

Will I be in charge of a project, or will I be helping the project managers?

Initially, you will be primarily supporting the project managers and other more experienced members of the team. However, after you’ve gained some experience with us and once you understand the business and how we work, you might have the opportunity to run a small project by yourself – with the project manager’s support and advice.

In other departments with more significant projects, you will be able to work with the senior project manager and receive mentoring and exposure, enabling you to understand how to run a large project for a multinational, well-recognised business.

Do you have a buddy or mentoring program to support graduates?

Yes, we do. Each graduate is teamed up with a mentor from our executive team. This mentor will guide you through the entire programme, and you will have regular catchups to ask questions and receive advice and feedback.

Our senior managers really care about our graduates and will help you to not only navigate your current work environment but also help you figure out where you want to go and how to get there.

Here is what our graduate Ryan had to say about the mentoring he received:

“Even though I have only been at Syndeticom for 4 months, I have received invaluable training and mentorship from the Syndeticom management team, and they have shown a keen interest in finding my passions and skills in order to nurture and expand upon them. I have been allowed a level of autonomy that allows me to develop my own skills and upskill with many training courses provided by the company allowing me to receive training from many of the world-renowned technology companies and manufacturers. From the day I started at Syndeticom, I was assigned a mentor that was independent from that of my rotation managers. My mentor allowed me to meet with them on a regular basis to discuss where I wanted to go and what skills I wanted to develop, allowing me to find my strengths and weaknesses in a friendly environment and allowing me to work on my professional skills with help from the Syndeticom management team.”

Ryan Farrell

What do the first day and first week usually look like for a new graduate?

Once an offer has been made and you’ve accepted it, we schedule your first day and organise inductions with key people. On your first day, you will meet with HR, receive a general introduction to the business, receive an overview of the systems we use and be introduced to our staff members.

After this, you will meet with your Line Manager (the manager of the department you are starting your first rotation in). Together, you will complete your graduate plan to set expectations and goals and agree on the different skills you wish to develop during your rotation.

During the first week, you will also meet with your mentor, who will then schedule regular meetings with you.

What are you looking for in a graduate?

To qualify for our graduate programme, you will need to have a degree from a university or equivalent tertiary institution. This is a requirement for all graduates.

Beyond that, we are looking for graduates who have a genuine interest in technology and innovation, who can demonstrate a love of learning and openness to new experiences, and who are self-motivated and want to make a difference by becoming an integral part of our business for years to come.

How many graduates are you looking to recruit over the next 12 months?

We will be recruiting at least four new graduates in the next 12 months. If we receive applications from more than four outstanding candidates, we will consider hiring more.

Most of us spend a lot of time at work. I don’t know about you, but for me, it’s important that I enjoy that time. Of course, it’s about earning money, and it can’t all be just fun and games. But I want to enjoy my work, be challenged, learn new things, feel supported by the people around me, work with likeminded people and have fun along the way.

If you’re anything like me and want to work in a company that is a highly regarded leader in its field, that dares to be different, is successful and that offers you the opportunity to take your career to the next level, you should consider applying for one of our current or upcoming roles.

To help you learn more about what it’s like to work with us, I sat down and compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions related to careers at Syndeticom. Hopefully, this will give you a better idea of what it’s like to work with us. Make sure you also check out our careers page for more information and current openings.

Why should I consider working with Syndeticom?

Our goal is to be Australia’s most dependable provider of digital infrastructure and to be trusted by our customers above any single competitor. We know that this goal will only be achieved by constant investment in our people. We consistently strive to build a formidable team of motivated professionals who love their jobs and insist on delivering nothing but the best for our customers.

For us, that is not just a company line. It’s what we live by, and it’s reflected in how much effort we put into creating the right work environment for our people. Here are some examples of what that looks like:

We understand that staff have their own career goals beyond just our company goals. We encourage everyone to run their own race, and if Syndeticom can be a tool for you to achieve your goals, then that is a win-win for us.

We encourage everyone to speak up, ask questions, get involved and to own their roles and responsibilities. As part of this, we apply the leader-leader approach across the entire business. That means no matter where you are working within the business, you are responsible for your actions – and we make sure you have the training and support to do so.

Your experience with Syndeticom will be different from day one. On arrival, you receive a personalised Syndeticom welcome pack. You will then complete a custom online induction, taking you through the history and values of our business, as well as the various elements of what we do and why we do it differently to others.

The people you work with have a lot to do with how much you enjoy your job, which is why introducing you to your new colleagues is very important to us. You will be personally introduced to all other members of your team and have a chance to get to know them a little. All new graduates and employees are welcomed to the business and introduced company-wide so that others are always looking out for you and can help you become part of the Syndeticom family.

We understand that people work better and do better jobs if they feel connected with their teams and clients. You will have the opportunity to connect with other team members in a number of social environments – from various organised social events to having lunch together in the breakout kitchen or working out together in the Balgowlah office gym. Syndeticom’s environment also provides frequent opportunities to build connections with Senior Management. You will be part of a team in which all members are approachable and supportive and cultivate an ‘open office’ attitude.

You will never get bored! We have a variety of different business units that offer career progression and opportunities. If you have good ideas and a can-do attitude, we would love to hear them and allow you to develop those ideas.

You get to work with leading-edge technology. We are considered a leader in our field, exploring and introducing new initiatives and technologies into our industry. Examples range from robotics and glass core fibre technology in the data centre through to the latest AV presentation and teaching aids in the classroom. That means working with us gives you a chance to be at the forefront of these new developments.

You get to experience and benefit from our global network. We are a part of the LanTro Global Alliance, the largest communications alliance in the world. This network and our other international partner companies offer you global exposure, insights and experience.

What roles and talent will you be looking for in the near future?

We are a fast-growing business, always looking for people that want to perform at their best. To support our growth, we will be recruiting for several roles in the next 12 months, including Engineering Graduates, Project Managers, Supervisors, Technicians, Trainees, Estimators, and Sales Experts.

Visit our careers page to see current openings and make sure you check back regularly for new roles.

What skills and experiences are you looking for when you recruit for the different roles?

As you can probably imagine, the specific skills and experiences will vary by role. However, since we are a growing business with different departments, we have requirements for a wide range of skills and experiences so there is a good chance you will find something that is a fit for you.

For example, we are looking for:

Technicians/Supervisors who have a Communications Licence (ACMA) or Electrical Licence, with experience in corporate installations, schools or government work

Graduates with an Engineering Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications or computer science (or a related area)

Project Managers who have an ACMA or Electrical Licence with industry experience. It is highly desirable to have Prince 2 training (or equivalent)

I invite you to check individual job ads to see what’s required for a specific role.

What are the typical characteristics of the Syndeticom team which help you win and retain your customers?

Our customers value us because we’re supportive, loyal, focused on quality and always work hard to deliver the best outcomes for them. We work as a team and get our different departments involved to present the best proposal and deliver the right solutions to our customers.

They also like that we’re easy to work with and like to have a bit of fun while on the job.

What would your staff say about working at Syndeticom?

Everyone’s experience is different. Some of the things I regularly hear when I talk to our people are:

That there are a wide range of opportunities for career development and training

That we have a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to speak up and work with a certain level of autonomy (as appropriate to their experience level)

That it’s a fun and friendly environment to work in

That we deliver excellent quality of work on high-standard jobs.

I often hear employees talk about how much they appreciate that we offer them different career paths based on their interests and skills, including audio visual, ICT, cabling, finance, and more. The chance to be involved in the converging technologies between AV, ICT, cloud and cabling is also something many appreciate about working here.

Some of our more innovative employees also love the fact that we are always looking to innovate and introduce new technologies into the industry, which makes their work more exciting and diverse.

Overall, I think most employees will say that coming to work is enjoyable because we have the perfect mix between getting the job done to the highest standard as well as enjoying ourselves while doing so.

What company values are most important to your staff?

Our core company values are LEARN, THINK, GROW and CONNECT. Even though the business places the same emphasis on each of them, I notice that employees tend to focus on different ones at different times. LEARN is always at the centre of focus, as everyone in the business is given the opportunity and encouragement to be trained, and to develop their skills and experience.

CONNECT has several connotations with the staff; it’s not only about personally connecting with one another in the fun family work environment and connecting with customers and our industry. It is also about connecting technologies and solutions that put us ahead of our competitors. Our staff are often suggesting new ideas to pull together connected solutions from our different business lines – converging AV and ICT solutions is an example.

What if I’m still studying? Do you offer opportunities for graduates, school leavers or apprentices?

A big YES to all three!

Being part of our Graduate Programme is a unique and exciting opportunity! It is your chance to obtain greater exposure and experience and to put your know-how into practice. We offer the opportunity to perform multiple roles within our different business units on a rotating basis. This gives you more exposure to a range of departments, including sales, client services, technical services, fitout and construction, audio visual, data centre, estimating and finance.

During the 24 month programme, you will have the opportunity to spend some time with each team, allowing you to develop foundational knowledge, professional skills and networks. It truly is a great way to kick start your career.

We also have great opportunities for school leavers or electrical/telecommunications apprentices who are looking to build a long-term and fulfilling career in audio visual. We have developed a traineeship programme that offers the opportunity to build a career in AV by undertaking formal training and vendor qualifications, and by working with experienced technicians that will teach and mentor you.

The trainee role offers strong financial rewards, an excellent launchpad into multiple industries and an opportunity to study and learn on the job. If this sounds like a great fit for you, check out our careers page for current openings and get in touch.

What staff training and mentoring opportunities do you offer?

Employee training is a high priority for us at Syndeticom, which is reflected in our continuous learning-focused culture. We know many of our staff want to improve and, of course, we want them to develop within their jobs too. All employees are offered training opportunities in a personalised training plan developed for each role through our learning platform. This learning platform has a massive library of 700 different courses, and you can access it through your mobile, which means you can access training from anywhere at any time.

In addition, core competencies and qualifications are documented on our skill matrix for all positions within the business, and employees are supported in achieving their career goals.

We also encourage mentoring at all levels in the business. At the graduate level, this is done through a formal mentoring programme matching Syndeticom executives to graduates. Technical, operational and business mentoring is also encouraged in an informal capacity throughout the company.

Friday Lunch and Learns are also conducted regularly and are a fun and engaging way to provide training across the business on technical, operational, management, leadership and sales skills.

Finally, there are traineeships. We offer various degrees of support for technical staff that want to improve their skills or learn new ones. Examples of traineeships could be Cert III in Telecommunications, Cert III in Data and Voice, Cert IV in Networking, or similar qualifications.

What other employee benefits do you offer?

In line with our vision and our values of learn, think, grow and connect, we work hard to develop our people and build a culture that is fun, energetic and cohesive. But don’t just take my word for it. Here are some of the initiatives in place in addition to training and mentoring, that help us to do this:

Health and fitness facilities, events and initiatives (including an on-site gym at one of our offices)

Support for charity and volunteer events that our staff are involved with

A recruitment bounty when we fill a new role with someone who was referred by a staff member

Annual and monthly awards for technicians and apprentices

Syndeticom gear

And more

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
